A stunning over-size 19th century antique Tabriz carpet from one of the oldest carpet-making towns in the world, distinguished by its extremely fine weave and wonderfully executed all-over Herati design made up of palmette motifs with soft, round outlines embellished with blossoms and curving leafy vines. The swirling ivory stems that connect the palmettes throughout the carpet bring a gentle sense of movement and symmetry to the entire design. The large main border echoes the same gentleness of movement and emphasizes it through the large, soft outlines of its saz-style leafs.
The restrained palette of colors are extremely well used to bring out every single meticulously woven detail. Various tonalities of blue and brown are mainly used and the subtle differences between them create an amazing feast for the eyes. The dark indigo is the perfect background for the gorgeous rust red, light blue, terracotta and sand hues of the floral design. The soft terra-cotta of the main border is rich and has immense visual depth thanks to the masterful abrash technique used to make it with its color subtly transitioning from warm, glowing madder red to a lighter terra-cotta and back.
This rare-found over-size Tabriz is a great piece of woven mastery with an exquisite classical design and a restrained palette of earthy tones that would be at home with both classical and modern interiors.
