Description

An antique Heriz rug with all the signature elements of its type. It features a large diamond-shaped central medallion flanked by two generously scaled palmettes and large corner pieces separated from the rest of the field with serrated borders. Adorning the rug all over in a rather dense fashion are angular leaves and stems, fronds with serrated edges, palmettes and rosettes expressed in a profusion of individual shapes and figures, each working in concert to animate the design. The symmetrical placement of motifs that echo each other on the right and left sides of the field is reminiscent of the sense of formality in city rugs, while the angular, geometric and independent rendering of the same motifs speaks to the more spontaneous tribal and folkloric roots of a classic Heriz. It is a work of mastery made possible by two different aesthetics coming together in a most balanced and nuanced way creating a richly textured artistic piece.

The saturated burnt orange and light, ethereal cream in the field are counterbalanced with the black in the central medallion and the main border. The warmth of the burnt orange enhances the depth of the design while the sombre black helps to bring the wealth of motifs into the foreground. Its a perfect color combination that would complement many different interiors and fascinate everyone with the patina it acquired over the years. The rug has a luminous, top quality lamb’s wool pile on a thickly made cotton foundation, which gives it extreme durability.
